Remember when Ford switched the steel body panels of the Ford F-150 out with aluminum ones, and everybody kind of freaked out, until they realized that a lighter truck is a more capable truck, and also aluminum doesn't rust?

In fact, part of Ford's real-world testing leading up to the release of the 2015 F-150 was giving away trucks with random body sections swapped, secretly, with aluminum, and seeing if customers could tell the difference after heavy use.

They could not.

After the success of aluminum in the F-150, Ford decided the world is ready for an aluminum-bodied 2017 Super Duty.

The weight shaved off the Super Duty using high-strength aluminum alloy was re-invested in other, performance-critical areas. The c-channel frame was replaced with a full-boxed frame, 24 times more rigid. The twin I-beam suspension was also upgraded for better handling and ride over impossible terrain. The axles and driveline are stronger for better durability and capability, and the brakes, too, are larger.
